Maruyama Area, Cafe Morihiko

One of my hobbies is going to local coffee shops and enjoying a cup of joe. I love Starbucks because it is definitely cheaper than going to your local one and it also has a great atmosphere inside. Every Starbucks coffee shop has its own original mood. The only thing is, you kind of know what’s on the menu since most of the drinks and food are standardized.

With that said, when I feel like splurging or exploring, I will usually indulge in a cup of more expensive coffee at a known local cafe. After years of living in Hokkaido, I finally made it to one of the premier shops: Cafe Morihiko in Maruyama.

Most people in Sapporo will tell you that the Maruyama area is usually expensive and quite trendy. And this cafe is the epitome of that. The place itself is quite tiny and you really have to go and search for it since it is located off the main roads and on a narrow  random street.

The building is a very old wooden house converted into a cafe. The exterior is covered with ivy and a woodshed is located on the side. Unfortunately, on this visit, I was not able to take any photos. But a quick Google search shows you that the store has plenty of atmosphere. You can check out some of the photos here.

I ordered their regular coffee with a cheesecake. This came in a set, which cost about ¥1000 (I think, as I’m not really sure since this was months ago). The cake portion was quite small, but the coffee was fantastic. It was strong and flavorful, just the way I like it.

I’m not sure why I waited so long to go there, but I’m very glad I did. The interior atmosphere was quite interesting. A friend and I sat upstairs on the second and floor and enjoyed a long, cosy chat. This was even though there were lots of people waiting. I’m glad they didn’t kick us out.

Again, it’s a good place to visit if you’re in the area.
